Since the resurgence of bed bugs, New York City has launched a war against these annoying, bloodsucking critters, but we’re fighting a losing battle! Here’s why:

Ineffective Insecticides:
Since banning the use of DDT, the “the magic bullet”, modern insecticides are proving to be somewhat ineffective.

Bed bugs’ behavior has changed:
They now travel to and from different locations in an apartment or home more and are active during the day. It’s almost as if this strain of bed bugs is on steroids.

Lack of Knowledge:
Too many people have never seen a bed bug. Too many think that bed bugs are microscopic. Because of this, they’re unable recognize the signs of bed bugs presence until they have an infestation.

Secondhand Furniture:
Without considering the consequence, people are acquiring secondhand furniture from sidewalks, flea markets, thrift shops, antique shops, friends, rental centers, etc.

Travelers:
Be it for business or pleasure, people are traveling to areas where bed bugs are a common household pest and are bringing them back to the U.S. in their luggage or on their clothing. Also we live in a multi-cultural country where bed bugs continue to exist, therefore bringing them back to the U.S. in their luggage or on their clothing

Improper Disposal:
The first inclination a person gets when he/she discovers bed bugs in their apartment is to discard their mattress. Encasing the mattress before disposal to prevent bed bugs from falling off in the common areas does not enter their minds. The results‹-bed bugs find their way into neighboring apartments.

Cost of Preparation--Improper Preparation
The Pre-treatment Preparation process is costly‹-particularly for individuals on fixed incomes. Not everyone can afford to spend hundreds of dollars prepping their apartments, so shortcuts are taken or they do nothing‹both are recipes for disaster! All Pest Control Management companies agree that a poorly prepared apartment reduces the effectiveness of the treatment by 75%.

Inability to Prep Apartments
The underprivileged, the elderly and physically, mentally and visually challenged persons are incapable of preparing their apartments as required by exterminators before treatment. Forcing this group of individuals to prep their apartment themselves is a good way to ensure an infestation in an entire building‹-creating a building-wide breach in the warrant of habitability! Residents are being constructively evicted and lawsuits are proving it’s not a problem that can be swept under the rug anymore! Because of this, tenants are breaking their leases or opting not to renew at an alarming rate.
